Other Natural Ideas

There is an ongoing effort in the natural beauty products industry to introduce preservatives that have a natural base that does not introduce toxins and other harmful effects to our bodies that chemical preservatives do. Though many of today's products describe themselves as natural, many still use harmful ingredients that you would not choose to put on your skin if properly informed. The goal of many crafters is produce paraben-free products and inform the general public.

Commercially produced topical medications , eye and nose drops, moisturizing lotions and creams, dentifrices, sunscreens , cleansers, deodorants, soaps and toothpastes can all contain parabens.

Skin rashes and eye damage are some of the results of the effects of using commercial skin products. Essential oils, because of the incredibly concentrated form in which they are produced offer many of the sustaining effects that chemical preservatives offer with few of the side-effects. They have been clinically shown to kill bacteria even at low levels of concentration.Thyme and oraganum are two of the most effective in this regard.

The following ingredients in natural products offer antiseptic qualities and varying protection from spoilage.

Bee Propolis : Has properties that have been known for more than two thousand years as way to seal wounds and offer anti-bacterial protection. Both the Greeks and Romans used it as as a topical medicine. In the bee hive it acts as anti-fungal agent to protect and seal the hive. It is still being used in Africa as a medicine and also as an adhesive and sealer.

Grapefruit Seed Extract : A wonderful natural antiseptic and disinfectant that can act as an antibiotic and preservative. It is especially effective in recipes that have have a water component as it works very well in that environment. According to some studies, it has been shown to be effective in restricting the growth of more than 500 different bacterial and viral strains. Also used as an agent against single and multi-celled parasites. This little "secret agent" is just what the natural soap is looking for.

Lemon : Lemon is an old favorite for the natural product producer. Coming from the Rutaceae family it contains acid termed C6H8O7. This along with the rich source of vitamin C make it an excellent preservative.

Neem Oil : An ancient remedy that can be traced back to early Indian civilization, neem oil is an amazingly powerful oil. It has been used and promoted as an anti-fungal and anti-protozoan. Also known as an anti-bacterial and spermicide.

Rosemary Extract : Carnosic acid found in rosemary extract has been shown to protect skin from UV damage. It also has been used as an anti-bacterial. New research claims it is effective against HIV-1. We can only hope this is true.
